Call of the Wild – Development Trust

Our aim was to use the funding to support the children in their last year at Sandfields Primary
School in Neath Port Talbot through our innovative ‘Resilience Programme’.
This is the perfect time to have the greatest impact, before they face the challenge of secondary
school. We wanted to prepare them for that move and attempt to give them some life skills to offset
future problems.

We set out to improve their resilience and confidence and improve their mental and physical
wellbeing and that’s exactly what we achieved!

The programme was a huge success! They took part in team tasks, building their communication
and leadership skills, while activities like mountain hiking and rock climbing pushed them well
beyond their comfort zones. They also learned coping theories and calming techniques to regulate
their behaviour.

Their teachers and support staff were delighted with the results, commenting, ‘Many of our children would never have the opportunity to do these activities, thank you for giving our children these opportunities. We have seen increased motivation and engagement and the increased confidence and have-a-go attitude of the children has surprised us!

They had a fantastic week and created memories I’m sure they will treasure forever! I would totally
recommend this programme to other schools.’
